Tool mark comparison

Tools such as bolt croppers, crowbars and screwdrivers are often used in the commissioning of crime to cut padlocks and to pry open doors and windows etc.

Manufacture and wear features on a tool can lead to the production of a characteristic cut or damage mark that can be specifically linked to an individual tool. Tool mark examinations are often carried out in association with other evidence types: for example, the transfer of paint from a tool to a mark or from the area of damage onto the tool.
